Designing UX: From User Research to User Interfaces

User Experience describes how well a digital interface satisfies the needs and expectations of users who work with this interface. It builds on understanding users, their goals, needs, and problems in a given context. Good UX caters to user requirements by structuring information in an intuitive way and making required functionality available at the right place and time.

How We Work

We like to start UX projects (or any project that ultimately has a user interface) by generating a deep understanding of users, usage situations, and other stakeholders. Through user interviews, surveys, or other documentation, we define different user types and describe them as proto-personas that include their background, tasks to be performed, needs and goals, and pain points. In a user or customer journey map, those insights are put into a chronological sequence. The user journey usually forms the basis for the initial ideation of features and approaches, which we then test for user acceptance using wireframes or storyboards.

From Insights to Interaction Design

Time to move to a more solution-centric approach by structuring functionalities per interaction screen on a function map. This gives an overview of all actions that need to be performed from onboarding screens to pop-ups for specific interactions. The resulting map is the basis for UI designers to create wireframes or to move straight to hi-fi designs.

User Testing

Before moving on to implementation, we make sure that the new interface appeals to future users. We do this by presenting wireframes to users or by observing their interactions with so-called click dummies. This usually leads to some adjustments and implementation in a final design ready for frontend development.

Implementation

We usually build on common component libraries or UI kits to implement web or app interfaces. For xR interfaces, we have to go several steps further. We need to define the usable environment, movement, and navigation (often hardware-dependent), possible (inter)actions. And then design the required UI controls for both xR and screen.

How does the application process work at Motius?

At Motius, our permanent positions follow a structured three-step application process. It starts with a first interview conducted by one of our recruiters, followed by a technical interview and finally our Motius Experience Day. For our talent pool, the application process consists of two steps. First, there is a talent pool interview, during which we assess your suitability for the pool based on your skills, experience, and potential. If selected, the second step involves a technical interview specifically tailored to a particular project role.
